What is wellness? The definition of wellness & how to achieve it

We often hear the word “wellness” but what does it really mean? Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. The University of Michigan’s Department of Occupational Safety & Environmental Health defines wellness as “a multidimensional state of being describing the interaction of a person’s physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, and environmental well-being.” In other words, wellness is about more than just your physical health – it’s a holistic approach that takes into account all aspects of your life.

So how do you achieve wellness? Although there is no one-size-fits-all answer, here are five key components of wellness to get you started on your journey:

1. Nutrition

Eating healthy foods is crucial for maintaining your physical and mental health. Make sure to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet and limit sugary and fatty foods. It’s also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water every day.

2. Exercise

Regular exercise is another essential part of wellbeing. Not only does it improve your physical health, but it can also help reduce stress levels and boost your mood. A moderate amount of exercise is the key to achieving these benefits, so find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your regular routine.

3. Sleep

Getting enough sleep is vital for both your physical and mental health. Most adults need around 7-8 hours of sleep per night. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, there are a few things you can try to help improve your sleep quality such as avoiding caffeine before bed and establishing a regular sleep schedule.

4. Stress Management

Chronic stress can lead to a number of health problems, so it’s important to find ways to manage stress effectively. Some good stress management techniques include exercise, deep breathing exercises, journaling, and spending time in nature.

5. Relationship Building & Social Connections

Having strong social connections is linked with better mental health and increased longevity. Spend time with loved ones, join a club or team, or volunteer in your community to nurture your relationships and build new ones.

These are just a few things you can do to start living a healthier, happier life!
